The potato is a starchy tuber of the plant Solanum tuberosum and is a root vegetable native to the Americas. The plant is a perennial in the nightshade family Solanaceae. Wild potato species can be found throughout the Americas, from Canada to southern Chile. They are particularly high in Fiber, Potassium, Vitamins B-6, and Vitamin C.

How Much Space Does Potatoe Plants Need?

Proper spacing of potatoes depends on the type of gardening you're doing and the type of potato that you're growing. Larger potatoes naturally need more space. However, the general recommendation is that you plant each potato 12 inches apart to allow for ample growing space. Each row needs to be three feet apart.

What Type Soil Does Potatoe Like?

Potatoes grow best in well-drained, sandy soil. A poorly drained soil is more likely to produce diseased tubers. Have your soil tested. The ideal soil pH level for potatoes is somewhat acidic, between 6 and 6.5, but they will tolerate soil with pH as low as 5.0.

Planting Instructions

To begin with, dig a trench that is 6-8 inches deep. Plant each piece of potato (cut side down, with the eyes pointing up) every 12-15 inches, with the rows spaced 3 feet apart. If your space is limited or if you would like to grow only baby potatoes, you can decrease the spacing between plants.

Nutrients

Normal-When planting, an NPK ratio of 15-15-15 is ideal. A month or two after they've been planted, potatoes need lots of nitrogen, so a fertilizer with an NPK of 34-0-0 is the best choice. An NPK of 12-12-17 or 14-7-21 is best for the last couple of months before harvest when the plants require more potassium.

Vegan- For best results if growing in small to medium size containers, be sure to incorporated before planting our Callemo Powder to help support the plants Calcium and Magnesium needs. Then our VeGrow Quick Start to get the root system started and then use our VeGrow Supreme Plus once a week for the duration of the plants life cycle.

What can I plant next to Potatoes?

There are several plants that are said to enhance the flavor of the potato tubers, including chamomile, basil, yarrow, parsley, and thyme (they also welcome in beneficial insects). Beans, cabbage, and corn all will help potatoes grow better and hence improve the flavor of the tubers.

Harvest Time

The tubers are ready to harvest when they're the size of hens' eggs. With maincrops for storage, wait until the foliage turns yellow, then cut it down and remove it. Wait for 10 days before harvesting the tubers, and leave them to dry for a few hours before storing.
